Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
P.L. 91-596 Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard(s) of falling: a.Middle School Cafeteria - An American Buildings Company type S2P24-36.9 24-gage metal roof panel, that was secured with two screws to the eave strut, was used as a "starter panel" walkway for employees to walk over, on or about 10/3/97. b.Middle School Cafeteria - An employee pushed an American Buildings Company type S2P24-36.9 24-gage metal roof panel with his foot while installing the panel as a walkway in an unsafe manner as he balanced himself in a prone position approximately 21 feet above the concrete floor and moved sideways between two roof purlins that were 4' 4-3/16" apart by moving his hands along the top purlin and moving his feet along the lower purlin, until the roof panel was in position approximately seven feet from the fire wall at the northeast section of the room, on or about 10/3/97. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to (a) follow the manufacturer's precautions and do not use a metal roof panel as a "starter panel" walkway unless the panel is secure at each end with clamps and a wooden walkboard assembly is run to the full length of the panel in the flat of the panel to strengthen it in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications, and (b) do not permit acrobatic maneuvers to position any material.
