Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by falling loads and/ or lifting equipment: a)Kill Floor, on or about 9/15/98: All of the hoist controls (One Drum Hoist, and Two Electric Chain Hoists) were not provided with labels showing the direction of hoist travel. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: Install Direction Labels. Follow the labeling requirements set forth in ASME/ANSI B30.16-1987, and ASME/ANSI B30.7-1994. b)Kill Floor, on or about 9/15/98: All of the hoists (One Drum Hoist, and Two Electric Chain Hoists) were not inspected. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: Conduct initial, frequent, and periodic inspections of the hoists and support structures for wear, deterioration or malfunction as per ASME/ANSI B30.16-1987, chapter 16-2, and ASME/ANSI B30.7-1994, chapter 7-2. c)Kill Floor, on or about 9/15/98: All of hoists (One Drum Hoist, and Two Electric Chain Hoists) were not provided with any load ratings. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: Provide load ratings for the hoists, hooks, chains, and support structures as per ASME/ANSI B30.16-1987, chapter 16-1, and ASME/ANSI B30.7-1994, chapter 7- 1.1. d)Kill Floor, on or about 9/15/98: All of the hoists (One Drum Hoist, and Two Electric Chain Hoists) were not provided with limit switches. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: Provided operational limit switches as per ASME/ANSI B30.16-1987, and ASME/ANSI B30.7-1994, chapter 7-2.2. e)Kill Floor, on or about 9/15/98: The Monorail transport system used to transport cattle was not provided with inspections, records of inspections, and maximum tonnage. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: Conduct initial, frequent, and periodic inspections of the hoists and support structures for wear, deterioration or malfunction as per ANSI B30.11-1973, chapter 11-2. Abatement certification is required for these items.
