Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards. a)Lawn Areas, on or about 6/16/98: Employee operating a Ferris CTR Commercial Lawn Mower, Model CTR20K, Serial# 244, on a sloped hill next to an embankment was crushed by the lawn mower. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: 1) Train employees in the safe operation of mowers such as, but not limited to training on riding mowers on slopes, on wet grass, limitations of hydrostatic drives, and usage of emergency/ parking brakes. 2) Provide additional training for employees using riding mowers that is outlined in the owners manual on page #'s 3,4,5,7, and 9. 3) Provide addiotional training on the maximum recommended slope that the riding mowers should be used on as outlined in the owners manual on page #4. Abatement documentation is required for this item.
