Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of fire and explosion while doing welding inside a tank aboard a ship: Location: Shipyard facility, drydock 1, Brooklyn. On or about 10/10/98 at approximately 4:40 pm, aboard a barge in drydock, an employee was welding inside cargo tank #6. Forced air ventilation was not being maintained at that time as required by Marine Chemist hot work permit certificate Ser. No. J43331. One feasible way to abate this hazard is to provide forced ventilation to the space being worked in as instructed by the Marine Chemist so as to maintain safe atmospheric conditions inside the tank when hot work is being done.
