Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being caught in the moving parts of the conveyor: a.Baggage room - Employees are exposed to the hazard of being struck by or caught in the moving parts of the conveyor because they are not properly trained; on or about 6/18/98. b.Baggage room - Employees are exposed to the hazard of being struck by or caught in the moving parts of the conveyor because the operators were not aware of the locations of the emergency stop buttons; on or about 6/18/98. c.Baggage room - Employees are exposed to the hazard of being struck by or caught in the moving parts of the conveyor because there were no routine inspections and preventive maintenance programs conducted to insure that the conveyor is safe to operate; on or about 6/18/98. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible method to reduce this hazard is as follows: 1.Employees in the bag room should be trained in the normal operation of the conveyor and also trained in emergency situations. 2.All emergency stop devices should be clearly marked and readily accessible. 3.Employees are aware of the location of the emergency stops and how they operate. 4.Set up an inspection program so that the conveyors are inspected periodically for any defect that may render the conveyor unsafe to operate. 5.When a conveyor is found to be unsafe to operate tag it out immediately and notify the maintenance department. 6.Set up a preventive maintenance program to help insure the conveyors operate safely.
