Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the condition(s) listed below: 5407 Slaton Hwy, Lubbock, Texas, on or about 6 October 1998, at approximately 1600 hours, an equipment operator and a mechanic were engaged in repairing the lift cylinder of a 30 foot Hobbs token trailer (Model dump) attached to a Mack truck. A quick connect coupler had disengaged while the dump trailer (empty weight 12,800 pounds) was in the extended position. This condition exposed an employee to a hazards of being struck/crushed by the tires of the tractor caused by the hydraulic fluid release unexpected quantities. Among other feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard would be: a) To use a truck equipped with a winch sufficient to hold the trailer suspended while relieving the hydraulic pressure. b) To use a hoist to hold the trailer suspended while relieving the hydraulic pressure.
