Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed while attempting to manually lift a Gable end wall. (a) Location - 24 Eames Street, North Reading, MA: On or about 07/06/00, employees were struck by the gable end wall while attempting to manually erect it. Among other methods, feasible means of abatement could include: 1. Lift the gable end wall with a crane. 2. Develop and implement a specific policy on the acceptable methods that employees must follow when manually lifting a wall. 3. Implement a program to use mechanical means, (ie: Wall Jacks), when lifting a wall.
