Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) The hazard of being struck by a vehicle used to transport general commodities. On or about April 15, 1998, the employer failed to instruct driver trainees in the hazards of moving a vehicle in a public area when driving in "teams". The employer did not adequately train "team drivers" on the hazards of moving a tractor and trailer during the daylight hours or at night before ascertaining their co-worker(s) were located safely away from the danger zone. One feasible and useful method of abatement would be to train team drivers/ co-drivers to account for their co-driver's position prior to moving the tractor and trailer.
