Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Steam Pit number 70, located adjacent to building 4201; Employees working in steam pit 70 were exposed to steam, that was 331 degrees Fahrenheit with a pressure of 90 pounds per square inch, leaking from the packing seal of a one inch globe valve and from an eight inch flange gasket. The steam leaks were in close proximity to the employee and could have caused second and third degree burns. Among others, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement would be to remove the employees from the steam pit until qualified maintenance personnel had repaired or eliminated the steam hazard before continuing work.nuing
