Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: The hazard of being struck by a falling load. In the machine shop near column I-5, floor mounted jib hoist was defective in that the mounting bolts at the base of the mast were loose, the monorail jib beam was twisted, the jib beam was not marked with it's rated capacity and when these deficiencies were identified the lifting device was not removed from service until repaired. One feasible means of abatement would be to: (a) Comply with ASME/ANSI standard B30.11-1993 section 11- 1.1.2 and mark the rated capacity of the monorail jib on the jib. (b) Remove the device from service until replace/repaired in accordance with ASME/ANSI B30.11-1993 section 11-2.3.3(a). (c) Ensure that the entire unit will lift the rated load by conducting a rated load test and maintaining a record of that test in accordance with ASME/ANSI B30.11-1993 section 11.2.2.2(a).
