Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to bursting pipe: (a) Warehouse: Compressed air was piped in an above ground PVC pipe system that was not enclosed in a conduit or casing of sufficient strength to provide protection from external damage and deterioration. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to replace the PVC pipe with a steel pipe system designed for compressed air utilization. (a)In the warehouse and near the production line PVC pipe was used to provide compressed air for cleaning in excess of 100 p.s.i. Note: Abatement certification required for this item.
