Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a)Railroad track siding #793, Caldwell, ID: On or about November 6, 1998, and at times prior thereto, employees accessed rail cars while they were moving to set brakes. The employee was exposed to crushing injuries when the rail car came in contact with a International Model F826 tractor used to pull the car. Among other methods, One feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: (1)Prohibit employees accessing rail cars while they are moving and instruct them to wait until the car has come to a complete stop before climbing the ladder to set brakes. (2)Provide a means to position the rail cars such as pushing the rail car with a properly equipped tractor. Note: Abatement certification required for this item.
