Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falls from bridges: (a)On or about June 4, 1997 and times prior thereto, employees were directed to cross a private bridge to Derr Island in Clarks Fork, Idaho. The bridge had a designated 8 ton load limit and the employees were delivering loads of rock with a total estimated weight of 20-22 tons in a Ford dump truck. Exceeding the bridge weight limit resulted in failure of the bridge deck. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is to use bridges rated for the load.
