Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falling: a)Worksite, center of building - An employee was observed straddling the guardrail of a Marklift Scissor Lift (MT256-20) basket, leaning out to perform work, while the scissor lift was elevated approximately 15 feet in the air. The employee was not standing firmly on the floor of the lift or secured by a safety harness and lanyard. On or about 7/16/97. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible method to minimize or eliminate this hazard is to: 1.Train the operators to comply with the ANSI standard A92.6-1979 section 14.2.6 which states "Personnel shall maintain a firm footing on the platform while working thereon unless they are secured by safety harness/lanyard fixed to manufacturer approved hard points. Use of railings or planks, ladders or any other device on the work platform not conforming to 14.3.3 for acheiving additional height shall be prohibited.
