Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: (a)On July 30, 1999, an employee operating a "Tiger-Turf" Model STT 61- 22 KA, on a slope hill next to a building "Milwaukee County Hospital" was crushed by the riding mower. Certification, and documentation/evidence of abatement is required. Certification of abatement is required by 29 CFR Part 1903 and is to be submitted within ten (10) calendar days after the abatement date. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one or more feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard is to: Train employees in the safe operation of riding mowers on slopes, wet grass, limitations of hydrostatic drives, and usage of emergency/parking brakes. 2) Provide additional training for employees on new equipment by providing operator's manual and/or ANSI B71.1 describing the safe operating procedures in section 20, fig.10. 3) Provide additional training on the maximum recommended slope that the riding mower should be used on as outline in the owners manual. Abatement documentation is required for this item.
