Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by a flying turnover bar which could inadvertently be left in the flywheel of a cold header. If the machine were to be turned on before removing the turnover bar, it could fly out and possibly strike somebody. (a) Main Production Room and Back Room: Turnover bars provided for manually turning flywheels on the cold headers were not spring loaded to prevent them from being left in the flywheels. Abatement Note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to provide spring loaded turnover bars which cannot be left in the flywheels on the cold headers as required by ANSI B11.7-1995.
