Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a severely rotted and unstable danger tree: JOBSITE: AN EMPLOYEE WAS FATALLY INJURED WHEN HE WAS STRUCK BY A SECTION OF A LARGE, SEVERELY ROTTED AND UNSTABLE DANGER TREE THAT HAD BROKEN AWAY FROM THE MAIN SECTION OF THE TREE DURING ATTEMPTS TO FELL THE TREE WITH A CHAIN SAW. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: FELL OR REMOVE DANGER TREES, INCLUDING LODGED TREES AND SNAGS, USING MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT OR OTHER TECHNIQUES THAT MINIMIZE EMPLOYEE EXPOSURE.
