Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: In the Receiving area of the warehouse: The employer did not furnish a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that the employees were exposed to a fall hazard associated with the use of a mobile stair unit which has sustained damage and is being used against the manufactures labeling. Employees are using a mobile stair system that has bent structural supports and has made the ladder unstable. This exposes the employees to potential falls in excess of fifteen feet. There are approximately 60 employees working in the facility and any of them has the potential to use the stairs. The stairs have been used for approximately 3 months according to interviewed employees. The labeling provided by the manufacturer clearly states "Inspection before each use. Never climb a damaged, bent, or broken ladder". Recommended methods of abatement include but are not limited to replacement of all damaged rails or removing the ladder unit from service. Replaced parts need to be in accordance with manufacturers recommendations. Abatement certification is required for this violation. The abatement certification sheet is enclosed with the citations.
