Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a tripping/caught-in between and/or crushing hazards: a) Newark Airport Facility - Ramp platforms: Employees working on platforms were exposed to a tripping/caught-in between hazard where there is an approximate six to eight inch gap between abutting platforms. Violation observed on or about 10/23/96 b) Newark Airport Facility: Employees working on platforms were exposed to a crushing hazard from "Igloos" which could fall off the platforms due to defective locks. Violation observed on or about 10/23/96 OR IN THE ALTERNATIVE: 29 CFR 1910. 23(a)(9): Floor hole(s) into which persons could not accidentally walk were not protected by securely held covers: Newark Airport Facility - Ramp platforms: Employees working on platforms are exposed to a tripping/caught-in between hazard where there is an approximate six to eight inch gap between abutting platforms.
