Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Severe burns from hot caustic liquids. Cookers in the kitchen area lacked temperature gauges and automatic control devices. This condition permitted overheating of the caustic liquids in the cookers resulting in the collapse of a rubber seal and the overflow of the hot, caustic liquid into the work area. One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others, to correct this hazard is the installation of temperature gauges and automatic control devices to prevent the overheating of hot, caustic liquids.
