Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) On or about 7/9/85, a compressed gas cylinder containing oxygen was used to pressure test a hydraulic crane system onboard the U.S.S. Patriot State. Employee(s) were thereby exposed to the hazard of fire and/or explosion. Among others, a feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to ensure that only water, hydraulic fluids, or suitable petroleum-based test fluids are used for such tests and that employees are properly supervised and trained in test procedures.
