Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Crushing Injuries during the operation of the Gasbarre 200-ton powdered metal press Number 20. Adequate inspections had not been made and written records were not maintained of inspection and maintenance actions on powdered metal presses to assure safeguarding of all presses. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct these hazards would be to: a) Install a brake monitor system where required. b) Implement a regular and periodic inspection and maintenance program. c) Establish a record keeping program to record inspections, deficiences, and repair of each powdered metal press. THE EMPLOYER WAS PREVIOUSLY CITED FOR A VIOLATION OF THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH STANDARD OR ITS EQUIVALENT, 1910.217(e)(1)(i), #1, item 3g, ISSUED ON 6/1/83.
