Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by debris: a) Employees engaged in maintenance activities on the Roof of the Pattern Shop discarded the trough of the screw conveyor by throwing it off the roof, exposing employees to the hazard of being struck by the material, September 12, 1985. Among other methods, some feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard are: 1) Provide a material chute to enclose the discarded material until material until it reaches the dump area. The chute should be designed and constructed of such strength as to eliminate failure due to impact of materials or debris loaded therein. 2) A competent employee should be assigned to control the area where t e material is to be discarded. The area should be barricaded warning signs posted. 3) Employee entrances or exits should be barricaded or protected by sheds or canopies to protect them from the hazard of materials falling and the sheds or canopies should be capable of sustaining the anticipated load of the materials being removed.
