Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) Death and crushing injuries caused by the collapse of structural steel members that were not secured or braced. On or about 02-25-92 the general contractor Alvarado Const- ruction with overall responsibility for safety at the Airport Office Building allowed structural steel members to be erected and left unbraced with no positive connections between the columns and the base plates on levels 6, 7 and 8. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is: 1. Ensure that all structural steel members are braced and secured from movement.
