Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a. The hazard of fire or explosion at the Gold Kist, Inc., worksite where the employer permitted the release of natural gas into the work area while connecting new pipe lines. The seriousness of the hazard was compounded by the fact that the natural gas in the existing pipe lines did not contain a recognizable odor. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to abate this hazard is to vent natural gas line purging operations to the outside and to inform other employers of the potential for accumulation of natural gas.
