Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falls of approximately 18 ft. to the ground while working within 2 ft. of the outer roof edge removing gutter. Operating a gas powered cutter parallel to the roof edge, and tearing off roof and insterting plastic material underneat edge of remaining roof insulation of the Wal-Mart, Denny Ave. Construction Project. Employees were performing the operation without any means of fall protection. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods include: 1) Provide guarded scaffolds with platform(s) of sufficient length, width, heights, and strength to protect employees removing gutter and roffing materials, or 2) Provide safety belts and lanyards attached to a structural member of the building or attached to a moveable lifeline stretched across the roof.
