Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serioius physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being splashed with molten metal: FURNACE ROOM: AN EMPLOYEE DUMPED AN 55 GALLON DRUM OF SCRAP BY HAND INTO THE SCRAP END OF THE ALUMINUM FURNACE. HE WAS EXPOSED TO SPLASHING MOLTEN METAL. FEASIBLE ABATEMENT METHODS: 1) INSTALL A MECHANIZED DUMPING SYSTEM OR A CONVEYOR SYSTEM TO FEED SCRAP INTO THE FURNACE SO THE EMPLOYEE DOES NOT HAVE TO STAND NEXT TO IT. 2) PREHEAT ALL SCRAP TO ELIMINATE MOISTURE BEFORE ADDING IT TO THE FURNACE.
