Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fire and explosion hazard: (a) AMPAL, INC., aluminum atomizing collection towers Numbers 1 and 2, employees collecting samples from the towers while the atomizing process was in operation were exposed to potential injuries from fire and explosion in that no over-temperature alarm or warning device was present on the cyclones or filter medium, on or about February 5, 1991 AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: 1) Equip the cyclones and cartridge filters with suitable instruments for recording the inside temperatures. Include an over-temperature alarm or warning device which has the limit setting safely below the maximum service temperature of the filter medium or safely below the ignition temperature of the dust layer or cloud, whichever is lowest.
