Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards from failure of hydraulic drill booms, rotating drill steel, breaking drill steel and flying rock and shotcrete from holes being drilled in the rock face: a) North Portal, Lehigh Tunnel, Jumbo 2 Boom, Joy-O, Jumbo 2 Boom, Joy 1-1, Jumbo 3 Boom, Tamrock 1-3; drill helpers positioned to the front of the operator's cab of the Jumbos were exposed to crushing hazards and the hazard of being struck by the booms, drill steels, flying rock and shotcrete, during the drilling operation. January 17, 1990. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: 1) Remove the helpers from the position in the front of the operator's cab of the Jumbos during the drilling operation.
