Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by falling trees and snags: (a) White Hawk Number 11 - Employee fell a tree which hung-up in the branches of a second tree. Employee then attempted to release hung-up tree by cutting down the supporting tree. Employee was exposed to the hazard of being struck by the hung-up tree. Observed October 15, 1992. (b) White Hawk Number 12 - Employee was falling a tree within the danger zone of two dangerous snags; observed October 15, 1992. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is: (1) Develop and implement specific written procedures and policies covering the hazards created by dangerous snags and hung-up trees. (2) Train employees on the hazards of dangerous snags and hung-up trees and safe procedures to use to minimize risks. (3) Do not allow employees to work within the danger zone of snags or hung-up trees. (4) Remove dangerous snags from a strip before initiating logging operations.
