Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to hazard of being struck by falling suspended loads from cranes due to the absence of periodic inspections to detect deficiencies; no rated load markings on lifting devices; and operation of the crane after unsafe conditions are disclosed. The following conditions contributed to these hazards: (a) Tubing Department - No periodic inspection records on the four 2-ton overhead cranes. (b) Tubing Department - Paper roll lifting devices had no rated load markings. (c) Tubing Department - Running ropes on cranes had broken wires and no determination made as to whether further use would constitute a safety hazard.
