Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5 (a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a. The hazard of being struck by rigging equipment that was used to replace the closing cable on an approximate 22 cubic yard clamshell bucket located aboard the barge "Weeks 551." An employee was standing in the bight/angle of the shackle and tugger cable which had been attached to an inadequate anchor point (an eyelet hole on the deck winch frame). Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to develop and implement written procedures, including employee training, for changing wire rope that include the use of adequately engineered anchor points and an appropriate sized snatch block instead of a shackle.
