Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: HEAT
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fire hazard due to the presence of flammable compressed hydrogen cylinders adjacent to an electric annealing furnace. The hydrogen is used in the annealing process. If a valve were to be inadvertently opened during changing of the cylinders, or if there were a leak of hydrogen gas, ignition could occur due to the heat of the furnace or a spark. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to relocate the hydrogen supply to at least twentyfive feet away from the furnace and any other sources of ignition. Also, hydrogen cylinders in storage shall be kept away from sources of ignition. Portable fire extinguishers shall also be provided in the immediate area.
