Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: A. BEING STRUCK AND/OR CRUSHED BY FALLING STEEL PLATES WHILE WORKING BENEATH OR IN VERY CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE YALE HOIST AND WALKERBUX MAGNET ARRANGEMENT LOCATED IN THE SNAGGING BAY. THE MAGNET IN USE HAD AN INOPERATIVE BATTERY LEVEL INDICATOR MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE OPERATOR TO KNOW IF THE BATTERY WAS PROPERLY CHARGED AND THE MAGNET IN FULL WORKING ORDER. IN ADDITION, THE MAGNET WAS MISSING THE TOP COVER USED TO ENCLOSE ITS BATTERY AND IT DID NOT HAVE THE REQUIRED LOAD CHART POSTED ON IT TO ALLOW WORKERS TO KNOW WHAT WEIGHTS THEY COULD PICK UP WITH RESPECT TO THE THICKNESS AND LENGTH OF THE PIECE BEING PICKED. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THESE HAZARDS IS TO PROVIDE A PROPERLY OPERATING MAGNET WITHOUT DEFECTS AND TO INSURE THAT WORKERS ARE PROPERLY TRAINED IN THE USE OF MAGNETS INCLUDING PROPER OPERATING PROCEDURES AND MAGNET LIMITATIONS.
