Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place or employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: a) In that employees were exposed to the hazard of corneal, retinal and skin burns and damage during the assembly, calibration and testing of Class IV laser systems. Among other methods, one feasible and accepted abatement method to correct this hazard is to establish and enforce a laser safety program such as that stipulated by ANSI Z1361-1986, American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers.
