Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) THE DANGER OF BEING STRUCK BY A FALLING LIFT WHEN INVOLVED IN THE RESCUE OPERATION OF A WORKER. FOUR WORKERS WERE ATTEMPTING TO FREE THE WORKER WHO WAS PINNED BETWEEN A WALL AND THE CAR OF THE LIFT WHEN THE BRAKES MALFUNCTIONED. THE WORKERS WERE LOCATED UNDERNEATH THE CAR OF THE MALFUNCTIONING LIFT WITHOUT HAVING FIRST SUPPORTED THE CAR TO ELIMINATE THE POSSIBLITY OF BEING CRUSHED BY THE CAR IF THE BRAKES MALFUNCTIONED AGAIN. ONE FEASIBLE METHOD TO HAVE CORRECTED THIS HAZARD WOULD HAVE BEEN TO SECURE THE CAR TO THE TOP OF THE LIFT BY A CHAIN OR CABLE TO PREVENT IT FROM FALLING IF THE BRAKES RELEASED.
