Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1):The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees. At a worksite operated by Archer Daniels Midland Company located at 7800 Thayer Street, Lincoln, Nebraska, the employer exposed an employee to an engulfment hazard while rodding grain to dislodge a clog through an access point in the below the bin spout 221. On April 12, 2024, while rodding grain, an employee was partially engulfed by grain flowing out of the access point onto the employee in the tunnel. FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHODS TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: 1. Develop, implement, and enforce a standard operating procedure detailing a safe process for "rodding grain" through a below the bin chute/leg to ensure employees are not exposed to grain engulfment. 2. Reduce the size of the access point in spout 221 used for "rodding grain" through a below the bin chute/leg to limit the amount/volume of grain to quantities that cannot engulf an employee.
