29 CFR 1910.132(d)(1): The employer shall assess the workplace to determine if hazards are present, or are likely to be present, which necessitate the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). On or about February 29, 2024, the employer did not adequately assess the hazards that were present or likely to be present to necessitate additional personal protective equipment such as but not limited to aluminizing clothing while maintenance activities were performed near the electric arc furnace (EAF) while in operation. Two electricians were adjusting the proximity switches of the connecting car, received 1st and 2nd degree burns when a reaction occurred in the furnace causing sparks and flames to erupt out of the openings.
