Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1):The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees. On or about February 26, 2024, the employer failed to ensure employees working as Electric Arc Furnace Attendants and Electric Arc Furnace Assistant Operators at the Faircrest Steel Plant, Melt Shop, Electric Arc Furnace were protected from the recognized hazard(s) of steam explosions and/or being struck-by molten slag material being ejected by the Electric Arc Furnace and/or Slag Pot during the furnace finishing operation, that could cause death or serious injury. During furnace finishing operations the employer required Electric Arc Furnace Attendants and Electric Arc Furnace Assistant Operators to work on and near the Temperature Sample Manipulator (TSM) to obtain temperature and chemistry samples from the furnace molten metal bath. Employees also add wood, saw dust, or other similar materials to the slag pot through the slag pit opening at the front of the furnace to keep the slag material from overflowing from the slag pot, a practice known as "bombing the slag pot".
