Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. a) On or before March 29, 2023, employees were exposed to struck-by hazards in that there was no machine guarding to prevent employees from accessing the rotating 4 arms on the Royalton coil turnstile and the moving 24/36 down-layer table. On March 15, 2023, an employee's hand was caught between two open steel coils located on one of the turnstile arms when the employee reached approximately 5' to the control panel and caused the horn on the down-layer to move. b) On or about March 29, 2023, the employer did not prevent employees from using the approximate 24" opening between toolbox shelves and the rotating Royalton 4 arm coil turnstile located at the narrow banding line near the 24/36 down layer line as a pedestrian walkway. Employees were exposed to a struck by hazard created by the rotating turnstile. This was last observed on April 12, 2023.
