Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.213(h)(1): The upper hood shall completely enclose the upper portion of the blade down to a point that will include the end of the saw arbor. The upper hood shall be constructed in such a manner and of such material that it will protect the operator from flying splinters, broken saw teeth, etc., and will deflect sawdust away from the operator. The sides of the lower exposed portion of the blade shall be guarded to the full diameter of the blade by a device that will automatically adjust itself to the thickness of the stock and remain in contact with stock being cut to give maximum protection possible for the operation being performed. a. On or about July 16, 2020, located at 825 Collins Avenue, Marysville, Ohio: the employer did not guard the exposed lower portion of the blade for the Boice Crane, Radial Arm Saw, Model No. 663373, Serial No. 7989-1. An employee amputated his left thumb while cutting a 5 1/2" wooden block as a result. Within the past five years, the employer had been cited for the same hazard in a different inspection. Franke's Wood Products, Inc., was previously cited for a violation for this Occupational Safety and Health standard, which was contained in OSHA inspection number 1202168, citation number 1, item number 2/b and was affirmed as final order on March 15, 2017, with respect to the workplace located at 825 Collins Avenue, Marysville, Ohio 43040.
