Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.132(a): Application. Protective equipment, including personal protective equipment for eyes, face, head, and extremities, protective clothing, respiratory devices, and protective shields and barriers, shall be provided, used, and maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition wherever it is necessary by reason of hazards of processes or environment, chemical hazards, radiological hazards, or mechanical irritants encountered in a manner capable of causing injury or impairment in the function of any part of the body through absorption, inhalation or physical contact. Melt Department, Transfer Station Area. On or about November 15, 2019, employees used a crucible picker on a remote-controlled hoist to transport a crucible filled with molten metal from the furnace area to a holding fixture at a transfer station. When lowering the crucible onto the fixture with the hoist, the bottom of the crucible hit the rimmed ring and vertical support pin of the fixture, causing the crucible to tip enough to cause some of the molten metal to splash out. Employees were exposed to serious thermal burns from the splash of molten metal mixture at approximately 2100 to 2150 degrees F. The type of coveralls provided and used were not adequate to prevent penetration of the fabric and transfer of heat to skin beneath. Abatement documentation is required for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d).
