OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): OSH ACT of 1970 SECTION (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck by hazards: The employer is failing to protect employees from struck-by hazards. This was most recently documented on or about September 4, 2019, at 3012 S. 24th street in Kansas city, KS. Employee(s) were exposed to struck-by hazards while setting up a shaft piece to the lathe chuck in order to polish the finish piece. The employer had not developed and implemented procedures to ensure the manual three jaw lathe chuck was operated and maintained in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Acceptable means of abatement include but are not limited to: a) Follow manufacturer's procedures for operating, maintaining, lubricating and cleaning of the lathe chuck. b) Ensure that the operators have receive training; according to the chuck manufacture recommendations for operating, maintaining, lubricating and cleaning; before being allowed to operation the lathe chuck. c) Use the lubricant recommended in the operating instructions. d) Do not use compressed air to clean the chuck, as recommended by the manufacture. e) Use a load cell to check gripping force at regular intervals as recommended by the manufacture.
