Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to burn hazards. a. Magretech, LLC located in Bellevue, Ohio: On or about November 23, 2018 the employer did not ensure magnesium scrap being charged into the magnesium melting furnaces located in the melt department, was free of moisture. An employee suffered serious burns from molten magnesium when a melting furnace erupted after the employee added Class 1 magnesium scrap to the furnace. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to follow the guidelines in ASTM E2349-18 Standard Practice for Safety Requirements in Metal Casting Operations: Sand Preparation, Molding, and Core Making; Melting and Pouring; and Cleaning and Finishing by ensuring charges of metal into the melting furnaces are free of moisture and foreign materials.
