Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.212(a)(3)(ii): The point of operation of machines whose operation exposes an employee to injury, shall be guarded. The guarding device shall be in conformity with any appropriate standards therefor, or, in the absence of applicable specific standards, shall be so designed and constructed as to prevent the operator from having any part of his body in the danger zone during the operating cycle: On or about 02 February 2018, the employer failed to guard the pinch points created at the point of operation of three Flycutter "Drill Presses" #21, #22, and #23. These machines were operated by a footswitch that left the employees' hands exposed. The employees are directed to place parts into the machine and press the foot pedal, which activated pneumatic jaws that held the part in place while the drill press lowered and completed the operating cycle. This exposed employees to caught-in, pinch points, and struck-by hazards. Abatement documentation is required in accordance with the 29 CFR 1903.19(d).
