Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards when working underneath vehicles that were propped up with a skid steer: a.) On or about November 9, 2017, the employer did not ensure employees were protected while removing catalytic converters from the underside of automobiles. Employees are required to use a skid steer to prop up the side of the vehicle and lay under the vehicle, exposing them to crushing hazards. Among other methods, the following are feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard. 1. Utilize a jack stand and meant for propping up vehicles and once the load has been raised, it should be cribbed, blocked, or secured immediately, before work begins. Additionally, employees shall be trained in the proper use of the jack stand. 2.) Utilize the skid steer or other adequate piece of equipment to flip the vehicles completely over before removing catalytic converters or similar parts.
