Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: GUARDING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards associated with spillage, containment and cleanup of a 1000 gallon day tank of MDI: South End, MDI Day Tank - Powered industrial truck traffic was required to drive in the aisle way directly adjacent to piping and a valve on the 1000 gallon day tank of MDI. The posts guarding the valve on the day tank had been struck on several occasions by this traffic, subjecting employees to a possible release of liquid MDI. Abatement Note: Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods could include: 1. Providing adequate guarding around the valve on the MDI day tank. 2. Building a diking system around the MDI day tank to prevent spills onto the plant
