Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falls from elevation: (a) The Sponco aerial ladder failed on or about May 21, 1996. The employer had not followed the Sponco manual as prescribed by the manufacturer. The ladder unit was not inspected monthly and the wire rope cables on the drum and ladder sections were not replaced annually, regardless of their condition. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method is to conduct a monthly maintenance inspection with written records and to replace all of the wire rope cables annually.n
