Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the condition(s) listed below: At the job-site, located at the intersection of I-40 West & Coulter Avenue, Amarillo, TX: Employees accessed the gas island overhang, to construct the metal facia, by way of a self propelled elevating work platform (scissor lift) and were exposed to falls between 6' and 14', created by the lack of standard railing (or the equivalent) on both ends of the work platform, and were observed not using supplied fall protection equipment, for the period of time up to and including 10/14/99. One feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be: To install / repair the scissor lift so that the open ends of the work platform were protected by standard railing or equivalent.
