Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being caught in a rotating conveyor belt: (a) M-2 Mill, coil conveyor; Employees were exposed to crushing hazards between coil cars while crossing the conveyor line due to unexpected start up of the conveyor. One feasible method of abatement, among others, would be to install an audible and visual warning system which would provide for a 10 second advance warning prior to the activation of the coil conveyor lines. Additionally, the employer shall implement administrative rules which shall: 1. Require the mill operator perform a visual inspection to ensure that no employees are on the conveyor prior to initiating the start up sequence. 2. Require that no employee be permitted to cross the conveyor line while the conveyor system is in operation. Abatement Documentation Is Required For This Item
